What is intermittent fasting? It is basically fasting for a certain period of time and non-fasting for a certain period of time. There are many different ways to do IF. What you need to do is try to find the way that works best for you because everyone is different.
IF has many benefits, but to talk about it briefly here are some things it does:
- Promotes weight loss/fat loss
- Improves blood sugar
- Keeps heart healthy
- Reduces inflammation
- Protects your brain
- Decreases hunger
- Very convenient (don’t have to prep 6 small meals)
To me, IF is where I fast (don’t eat any calories) for 16-18 hours and then have an eating window of non-fasting 6-8 hours (intake calories). For some people this might seem unrealistic because everyone always says not to skip breakfast or dinner, but it really does not matter when you eat what matters is the caloric deficit at the end of the day. What I mean by that is you are burning more calories than you are taking in-> meaning calories out are less than calories in resulting in weight/fat loss. Recent studies have shown when skipping breakfast it will actually help you burn fat instead of burning your breakfast. Why you should skip breakfast If you like to eat breakfast more than dinner then choose to skip dinner instead. It really depends on your preference and what you will actually stick with.
Obviously IF is not for everyone, but if you are looking to lose fat/weight or getting back on track in a healthy lifestyle I personally think this is something you should consider. If you are considering doing IF a good fasting for beginners is 16 hour fast and 8 hour non-fast. You can do IF I believe for 1-2 months depending on your goals. Speaking from experience IF is so worth, and the results are incredible! If you are iffy about it or have some health issues in the past you should talk to your doctor first.
More personal thoughts: I really do like IF not only the fat loss aspect, but also because I have way more energy to do more when I am not eating. I feel my mind is clearer and I can actually concentrate on my work. If you are looking to do IF I strongly suggest you get the app called “Zero” in the apple store it tracks your fasting hours for you and it works great! Zero App
I am currently doing IF that is why I am sharing about it because I am currently trying to shred fat/lose excess weight around my muscles. I have been doing it for 2 weeks and I have already lost 2% body fat and 8 pounds down. What I have been doing is fasting for 14-16 hours and then I have an 7-8 hour window where I eat breakfast and dinner, but no lunch. I will continue to share on my social media and update y’all with my results.
Since I am not a professional in nutrition here are a couple of links that will help you if you are more interested:
